Popular visitor sites need regular tree surgeon inspections

tree services Woolton L25Strawberry Field welcomes thousands of visitors annually with its Beatles themed gallery. The piano that John Lennon composed, 'Imagine', on is hosted at the purpose built visitor centre and cafe. Strawberry Field funds important work from the income generated by visitors. The centre is also home to the charity's, 'Steps to Work', a charity project  helping youngsters with learning difficulties, overcome the barriers to employment.

The grounds are a reflective space in keeping with the charity's aims. Walk amongst the tree lined garden, its gentle pathways dotted with the original Salvation Army children's home stones or get close to the famous red gates that have greeted visitors since the heyday of Beatlemania in the 1960s.

Tree cutting, pruning, thinning

A site which attracts thousands of visitors each year needs tree management, pruning and thinning services for aesthetic and health and safety reasons.
Mature trees enhance a site's appearance. For Strawberry Field, walking in the grounds adds to the contemplative feel for visitors. From a safety point of view, old trees may be diseased. Ivy growing on older or diseased trees adds weight and increases the 'sail' effect in high winds. Excessive canopy growth also increases tree movement in high winds. This increases the forces the tree is subject to in these conditions. Typically this is where unmanaged trees fail and fall.  This underlines the need for regular tree inspection
and review is needed by a tree surgeon.

The lifespan of older trees can be increased by judicious thinning to reduce the forces the tree experiences in winter winds. North West Landscapes Ltd's great communication plays a vital role ensuring a sensible balance is struck between visitor safety and maintaining the landscape.

Video transcript: John Hughes, site client liaison manager, North West Landscapes Ltd:

Personal touch with clients

'The thing about site liaison is, having a personal touch with people, each visit. Getting to know the client, staying in touch, each visit.

As a site manager, you need to be available to people. Most of the people who we liaise with on site have got my personal phone number. They can give me a call even on the days when they're not due to be done. Give me a call if there's a job they need doing, maybe we can drop something and fit them in that day.

Working to the tree survey

[On Strawberry Field this job] Some of the trees have overgrown and need a little bit of a reduction. So we'll reduce them by about 20% as specified by the tree survey which we've been given. That just helps in stormy conditions when the weather's bad. Certain limbs may well fail. They (the trees) probably won't move about as much with less weight in them. And it just helps the tree to last that little bit longer. We've felled some trees which were diseased, damaged or dead.

Importance of safe working

When you're doing tree work, the key watchword is safety. More than anything it's safety. You need to be safe. We do a lot of maintenance work on other sites for the [John Moores] university, schools & colleges. We like to think that we do a really good job.

We leave our sites clean and clear after each day. No job is too small for us. If it comes to ride on mowers, hedge trimming, tree surgery, litter picking - We'll do the lot. We're there for everyone'.
