Gardening apprenticeships Liverpool with North West Landscapes Ltd

Parents worry for their youngsters' future

Should you encourage them to University or into apprenticeships where they'll start earning and gain real world experience of the world of work?

Apprenticeships in Liverpool which offer a sure footing into work and life skills are valuable opportunities.  North West Landscapes Ltd believes the future of jobs in Liverpool depends on investing in young people. For a gardening services & tree surgeon business operating in Liverpool, Wirral and Cheshire, we're well placed to make that commitment to staff and the environment.

Gardening apprenticeship - Josh's story with us

Josh started at 16. Did his diploma, still here 5 years later

Josh came to us at sixteen. We put him through his Diploma Level 2 in Horticulture with Rocket Training over two years while he trained on the job. He's now been with North West Landscapes Grounds maintenance & Tree Surgeons for over 5 years and is aged 21. The short interview with Josh in the video below gives a useful reflection on his experience. Josh gives sound advice to school leavers trying to get into the world of work. You can hear what Josh has made of his apprenticeship in the video below.

Every young person comes with their own aptitudes and interests. They bring their parcels of life experience, habits and ways of seeing the world. Josh makes an unusual point when he says, in the video, that John (Hughes, site liaison manager) and Richard (Team manager) took the time to adjust to him, to find out what kind of a person Josh was.

Andy Jackson, Apprenticeship & Training Manager, Rocket Training, reflects on both apprentices.

"Martin and Josh began their apprenticeships at 16 years of age. Martin's interests in horticulture developed as he grew in confidence on different tasks. As his knowledge of the subject grew, he started to ask more questions and developed a keen interest.  Josh was keen from the outset. Josh came to the college via North West Landscapes and his interest was clear from the start"

North West Landscapes Ltd company history

Many of Liverpool's local entrepreneurs and business owners have faced the challenges in 2020-21. Our company history was built in the tough times of the early 1980s. This has stood us in good stead.  Our company was started by David's father, Cyril, a half Chinese ex-docker, North West Landscapes developed from very modest beginnings.  Read and hear about the roots of the company here.

Over the course of our 36+ years in existence, we've provided employment to many staff.
Apprentices Martin and Josh have been with us for over 5 years and have gained their Diploma Level 2s in Horticulture. This gives a foundation for continuing their landscaping careers. Both are now full time, regular staff. They're gaining responsibility, self confidence and have the scope to drive their careers forward in different areas of horticulture.

North West Landscapes have had 7 apprentices we've trained up, introducing youngsters to the world of work, providing training, mentoring and the support of their more mature colleagues.  These formative experiences ground young people, giving them an income and give them their introduction into the adult work world. We've just taken on another apprentice (August 2021) on trial.

We employ and train apprentices. We look for apprentices with the commitment to learn and work hard. Martin, in the photo above, is was planting his very first tree. Martin says he's 'in the best firm and job in the world' and he's keen to learn more.
